History

The Who's original rendition of this instrumental piece served to tie the musical themes of the album together and bridge into the rock opera’s triumphant ending. Phish’s lone rendition of this instrumental piece has it all: Page’s repetitive play on the “Love Reign O’er Me” theme, Fishman’s Keith Moon-esque fills, Trey’s subtle guitar tones, Mike’s rumble on bass, and the power of the horns, which deliver the awakening that the story’s narrator hears and heeds. A challenging compositional piece, Phish managed to play the song near-flawlessly and provide the final plateau before the set’s finale.
