I've been seeing Phish since the early '90s and I failed to see how they sucked in '96 (although I heard it plenty then and since) and I failed to see how they sucked this summer. Certainly you can hear in 2004 how they were ready to be done, I'll grant that. At any rate, these shows sounded hot, just like the rest of the summer did to my ears.
Interestingly, if I had to take just one year of Phish to the proverbial dessert island and my choices were limited to 1996, 2004 and 2016, I'd grab 2004 and it wouldn't even be close.
