I think going all the way back to 2009 is a bit short-sighted. Lots of good examples of them Pushing boundaries. Tahoe Light is an obvious example, there are dozens more.
I don't disagree that there are plenty of moments where they are exploring-I do find plenty of jams these days still. It just seems that they are less likely to get comfortable in those spaces. They get there and quickly enough move out if it. I just don't find anything but YEM/DWD hitting a 20 minute mark these days-I wonder why the other songs don't get more attention, even if only occasionally.
