PHISH IN JAX, PETRICHOR, AND TERMINAL NOSTALGIA

I'll spare you the play by play and sum up my impression of tonight's show as well as the two Charleston shows over the weekend.

Phish has proven once again that they are as viable and as important as ever. Petrichor is an opus that encompasses the entire spirit of the band. It confused the shit out of many people when they opened the tour with it. For me, anytime I get to hear a phish song live for the first time I get chills. My buddy and I listened to this version 10 times the next day and marveled at it's brilliance. When they pulled it out again tonight after warming the crowd up with an outstanding first part of the set we were elated!

The entire show tonight was exceptional. The Charleston shows were great, too. I heard some grumbling after the Saturday night show and it really bothered me. I read lukewarm or negative reviews of almost every show on this website.

Here's how I look at it. A Phish show is like a new book by your favorite author. You are excited to open it, get it started, and get the feel of the story. In some cases, the story is so easy to read that you can't put it down. It flows well and time passes very quickly.

Other times the story is more complicated. Factors like hurricanes, personal tragedies,
and new beginnings make the story a bit tougher to digest.

The main difference between a Phish show and a book by your favorite author? PHISH IS WRITING THE BOOK IN FRONT OF 15000 PEOPLE. There is no editor. There are no revisions.

Improvisational music is all about taking chances. No risk, no reward. If your idea of a reward is to hear Phish play the songs that YOU want to hear, you're missing the whole point. If the band lets you down that's on you.

It seems like a large percentage of Phish fans these days are more interested in recreating the past than being in the present. They are fans of the nostalgia, not the band.

Trey, Mike, Page, and Fish has been pushing the limits of what music can be for 3 decades. Why would they stop now?

You can't own Phish anymore than you can own all of the fishes in the sea. Open your mind and support their mission or maybe get off the train?

Good stuff. Love Undermind. Can't get enough of Steam!!!!! I hope Phish continue to push their new material. Abandon the old stuff for awhile. Agitate the fan boys hahahahaha. Seriously. Play Petrichor every show of the tour. Is this review long enough yet ? Do I really have to have a back story to each review ?!?

Coming off of the Charleston run expectations weren't too high. That may have been a good thing. First set threw down with the best opening sequence of the tour. KDF was a tight a groove and got the party started right in time for Moma. Good to hear a mike's groove. Mike out proved the groove.

Crossed had everyone thinking of dicks (Ron Jeremy). Piper, clearly the highlight of the night, is recommended for a few listens. And ya can't beat an antelope closer with heightened energy. The encore was a nice ode to jacksonvilles own Lynryd Skynrd. Glad they topped it off with a Zero. Say what you want but the house was rocking. Overall very pleased.

I've read many negative reviews across blogs and I'm really trying to comprehend what I missed because I thought this was a well-played, above-average show. The boys are at the top of their game right now - the scope of the game is just a bit different in comparison to, say 1996. The Halloween 96' Crosseyed was stellar, and tonight's was as well. A big fan of the 2nd set teases.

KDF was strong, Moma had some girth, solid Undermind w/ a strong 1st set Groove closer. Didn't like the placement of Bouncing, low-point for me. I'm going to call Petrichor the 2016 Fall Tour highlight. Honestly, a master piece in it's own right and I think it's going to be well-served moving forward. I'm really impressed this song. We'll see. The Steam > Piper was definitely a high note.

I wanted a taste of the tour before I went to Vegas and since I'm from Florida, I decided to fly up for this one.
This may be a insignificant statistic, but this was the first single night Florida show since 1996.
What made it interesting for me, apart from a solid first set, was the C&P second set opener.
The only other single Florida show I saw was my first on 11/2/96. History showed they opened the second set with C&P there as well.
I was 50' from the stage with a huge smile.
This show was a very tasty appetizer to Vegas.

Flew down to FL for the weekend to see some friends and see the show on Sunday. Venue was a little over half capacity, but when they got onstage it got plenty loud in Jacksonville. Really fun show for the fans.

The second set started as a 9/4/16 reprise (and looking at it now, our first sets were oddly similar as well), and that Piper jam gets out there into some fun territory, definitely check out that Crosseyed>Steam>Piper three part saga. Wingsuit and Velvet sea really sucked the energy out of the room after these three, but all in all, a fun show for a first trip from the boys.

I try to only write reviews for when I actually attend. So Here we go.

Rolled in around 6:00, had fun at Shakedown and we had some rain so my buddies and I decided to head into the venue...

Phish came on a little after 8, and opened with an upbeat trio of KDF, Moma, and BOTT. First set was solid, the best part for me was Petrichor. Really beautiful song! Was very surprised to see this one played after Friday. A lot of chompers in my section during this one, but hey whatever. Overall, pleased with the 1st set. Finished on a high note with Mike's.

Second set I no doubt had high expectations. Crosseyed had me thinking great things were ahead, and I was indeed right. Crosseyed didn't really get the jam treatment, but Steam was a nice segue. Steam seemed pretty standard, but the meat of the set was the next song Piper. I still haven't listened back to it, but once again Phish delivered! It was the moment that we all come to Phish shows. Definitely listen to that! Wingsuit was a nice needed breather, and the rest of the set was good. Had hoped for something off of Junta, but no dice... Maybe next time Phish!

Stacked setlist, with plenty of potential for jamming par excellence, yet the Piper was the most interesting song of the night--unless you're a huge Skynyrd fan--and even it didn't really take off like it might have. I'll play this card, though: I personally don't mind--if they're not sacrificing valuable time in the setlist that honestly would be otherwise devoted to enchanting jams--a sequence like Wingsuit, Sparkle > The Wedge, Wading, even in Set II. That makes me an odd duck, but as a college colleague of mind used to say, "Lord love a duck." I think I'm about over the (bob)weav(er)ing Crosseyed through sets in a way that I'm not over them doing it with Tweezer or Mike's, and by the way, how short was that Weekapaug? This may be the one exception to the "never miss a Sunday show" rule (OK, it's not, you don't miss any shows!) and a rare occasion when an undersold show doesn't magically turn out to be a real kick in the pants to people who skipped it.

I agree with those who said that the opening sequence was fantastic. I don't care if the songs are overplayed; it's HOW they're played that matters, and I thought these were fun.

It's always nice to hear Undermind and Steam in the same show, but lately I've really become used to them being on the back end of some killer segues, partially because they're so easy to segue into.

Also all for them playing new material and switching things up re: song orders. The actual meat of the songs was warm, definitely not spicy, maybe even a little bland. No minds were blown (presumably; if so, it was the drugs), but a goo dtime was had (presumably; if not it's on you).

Watched from the couch...

First set was well-played, had a good flow, but wasn't particularly memorable either. Highlights for me were Undermind (loved the extra mustard on Fishman's fills at the end) and a nice Stash. I'm slowly warming up to Petrichor - it certainly sounds better live than on the album (the concert bells are a real turn-off for me). Live, the song breathes more. I'm not holding out hope for the Mike's 2nd jams any more, but won't lie that I would have rather heard anything *but* Bouncing between Mike's and Weekapaug.

Crosseyed was short and sweet. To me, the clear highlight of the 2nd set and the night was Steam > Piper. Piper, in particular was fantastic - patient and well-jammed. The dissolve into Wingsuit was a welcome antithesis to yet another installment of "ripcord Trey." The 4th quarter... let's just say they were playing not to lose instead of playing to win.

The nod to Skynyrd for the encore was nice, but go for the gusto, Phish - Freebird or bust!

Average first set with throwaway versions of Undermind, Mike's and Weekapaug. Not that good a set.

Set 2 had promise. Crosseyed was ripcorded. Steam didn't do much. Piper had awesome moments, but also those stupid f***ing "WOOs" and some disjointed parts that were a mess. Seemed like half of Piper was really good. Lol at everything that came after Piper. Garbage.
