Trey teased 'A' Train in Bowie. According to the December 1989 Phish Update that followed this gig, "[a] number of unfortunate events occurred" at this show. Reportedly the unfortunate events began with a failed attempt by the venue to divide drinking-age fans from underage fans using a velvet rope. Adding to the confusion was an explosion on or near the stage during David Bowie (possibly a flash pot or fireworks) which pushed the crowd over the edge. The show was cut short when the house lights were turned on and bouncers quickly evacuated everybody from the venue. The source of these show notes is phish.com.

rasoup I believe this show was stopped due to someone throwing a bottle through a window. I do remember full on pyrotechnics being used during the Frankenstein first set closer. Good stuff!!!

The pitch does seem a bit slow in spots? Most noticeable during Tela.

Things kick off with Mike’s Song. Unfortunately most of the jam portion is cut. Mike’s solo to start Weekapaug has a little more bounce than the versions that have preceded it. Decent Gin tonight. Reba had a nice but very short jam tonight. Fantastic YEM! Strong jam section. This leads into the second version of Frankenstein. This one isn’t as impressive as the debut version in Burlington but wraps set 1 up in arena rock fashion. Hard to believe they would be selling out amphitheater’s and arenas just 4 short years later in this state! Also, I forgot to mention it the last time but I love the vocal breakdown in these early versions of Frankenstein.

Who doesn’t love a Sloth second set opener! Nice transition into another solid Bag! Tela is dedicated to an anonymous birthday boy/girl. Beautiful version that melts into Bowie! This Bowie isn’t flashy but still delivers the goods! Just as they we’re starting to come in for a landing the tape abruptly ends! Harsh cut for sure!

DollarBill There are definitely tape speed issues on this recording of another average fall '89 show. It seems like it took the band awhile to warm up. Mike's groove was just not locking in to my ears, although; check out Mike's great intro to Weekapaug. Lots of new-ish material presented here with decent performances of Gin, Foam, Oh Kee Pa, and My Sweet One. The new and improved Reba arrangement sounds much smoother. YEM is ok, but has a great jam at the end. The newly added Frankenstein cleans up the first set. They just didn't sound very locked in with Fishman yet.

Too bad it's an abbreviated second set because it sounds like they started to really get it together with an ok Sloth, and a solid Bag. The newly reworked Tela was a bit rough, and a smoking Bowie gets cut off on the recording and ended the show from what I've read here.

Check this one out if you need to hear the first reworked Reba and Tela.

TheEmu This recording suffers a little bit from a slow source tape, which causes songs like Reba and Foam to sound plodding and labored, and makes Page sound weird on Tela. It also has a couple of egregious cuts, first killing most of the Mike's jam, and later the end of Bowie. For the rest, it can be classified pretty much across the board as solid but standard, with a strong Weekapaug featuring patient work from Trey, and a YEM that builds from OK to pretty darn hot at the end. Not much else to say, other than that. I'll look the other way on the slow tape and the cuts and say three stars for this one.
