A blackout occurred during Chalk Dust. The drum solo and the ensuing Mr. P.C. featured Carl Gerhard on trumpet, who also performed on ‘A’ Train, Magilla, Cavern, and Lawn Boy. Mr. P.C. was performed for the first time since November 11, 1988 (338 shows) and included a Spider-Man theme tease from Gerhard. The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday was introduced as “The Old Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday.” This show fell on Page’s 28th birthday, a point noted repeatedly throughout the gig. I Didn't Know featured Fish on trombone. Fluffhead was unfinished; the rest of the band sung Happy Birthday to Page first over the Fluffhead melody, followed by the Happy Birthday melody. Happy Birthday was performed for the first time since September 29, 1990 (105 shows). Possum contained Yield Not To Temptation and I Know a Little teases. Magilla contained a full-band Flintstones theme tease. Mississippi Queen was teased during Fish's vacuum solo in Bike. The pause in BBFCFM featured a final rendition of Happy Birthday and the presentation of a cake; Fish then responded to the “how old are you?” crowd chants by counting off BBFCFM: “I’ll tell you how old he is: 1-2-3-4!”

This was a most incredible day for me as well, and what a hot show!

First, the day: I remeber it so clearly... It was beautiful and warm, and at around noon, I drove down to Providence. I had a 2:00 meeting scheduled with the clan at CoSA, my perspective place of work for that upcoming summer. I crusied down the Mass Pike and Route 146 listening to the 2/9/91 Smith College show. The sunroof was open, the windows were down, I was done with classes, and my spirits were high. At around 2:00pm I arrived at CoSA. I pressed the little buzzer, and they beeped me in. As I walked through the office, (after several licks from Ben, the CoSA dog) I noticed that my friend Greg, the CEO of CoSA, was already sitting down with two men. I could see Greg, but the other two had their backs to me. Greg motioned for me to come over.... As I approached, I paused several times to talk to Dave, Dave, and Sarah, the CoSA employees. When I finally made over to Greg, he stopped whatever he was saying and said, "... and this is the guy I was telling you about.... Trey, Page, this is John Greene.... he is the one who will be completing the Esther video, and working on the other CoSA/Phish projects with your approval." I was blown away. The reason I didn't recognize Trey was he had just gotten a serious haircut :-) Anyhow, that was the day I met those guys. Greg, Trey, Page, and I talked business stuff for an hour or so, we got the go ahead on the Esther video, and I had a job offer! Mike showed up a little later to check out all the CoSA stuff, but seemed more or less uninterested. After a while, Trey and Page left to go to the Campus Club (a 5 minute walk from CoSA). Greg and I spent the afternoon together, talked about the summer, partied up with the KGB, and eventually wound up at the Campus Club. This show was before the Campus Club was renovated, and it was easily 95 - 100 degrees in that place. People were dumping pitchers of water over their heads!! The power went out during the first song (Chalkdust), and everyone new we were in for a great show. Fishman played Syd Barrett's "Bike" which made my night. Earlier, I had asked Trey if Fishman ever sang "Bike", because I thought it'd be a great song for him to sing, and Trey said "Yeah, he does that one every now and then, but he hasn't done it in a while"... I guess Trey likes it too :-) I'll ask JP if he has that show next time I talk to him, and maybe we'll run a tree with it. See ya, phriends! -John o o o

TheEmu I think this is an interesting show with some solid playing and a few good moments, including Mr. PC coming out of the blackout, which is freaking sweet, and an absolutely SCORCHING Weekapaug! The Page birthday stuff is amusing, especially the BBFCFM. I always love a good BBFCFM. That said, there is some stuff I'm not as fond of, including Page in Harry Hood and Page's solo in Magilla. You know, I like the horns, I like jazz, and there are certain tunes that just beg for horns (Flat Fee, Suzy) but sometimes they just disrupt things, IMO. I think maybe sometimes they have to focus on making room for the horns and forget about their own playing. Anyway, there's some flubbage here and there, particularly in Guelah, but for the most part, everything is tight, and given the highlights I think this show is well over the 4-star bar.

thelot Decent audience recording for this show. The Campus Club acoustics could be better but what can you do.

Chalk Dust kicks things off. During the jam the PA blows out. The recording cuts out and fades back in with Drums into the first Mr. PC in two and a half years. Carl Gerhard joins the band, foreshadowing what was to come. Cool Spider-Man theme tease. Trey also takes a really nice solo Mr. PC. Well played Reba. Solid Stash. Mike’s has a short but sweet second jam. Weekapaug is hypnotic! Good stuff! Instead of closing out the first half with ‘paug, they bring Carl Gerhard out again for a tasty version of A-Train to close out the set.

Set 2 kicks off with a fantastic Possum. Great version of Fluffhead with the arrival section segueing into a Happy Birthday to Page singalong. Carls Gerhard adds his talents to well played versions of Magilla and Cavern.
A solid Hood follows. Fish treats Providence to the first Bike of the year. Another fun BBFCFM with a mid song Happy Birthday to Page band/audience singalong. The drop back into BBFCFM to close out the set is hilarious. Lawn Boy with Carl “Gears” Gerhard is just perfect. Great show!
