This show featured more fun stage banter, as Trey referred to Fish as “the hometown boy” and Fish commented about embarrassing himself in front of his entire class. Prior to Alumni Blues, Trey referenced that day’s Syracuse University graduation events and dedicated the song to the graduates in the audience. Prior to YEM, Trey commented that his mother was in the audience, “all the way from Ireland,” and dedicated the song to her. Possum included Fishin' Hole (aka The Andy Griffith Show theme) teases. The Bowie hi-hat intro included SOAM, ‘A’ Train, and Fluffhead teases. Suzy contained a brief Flintstones theme tease from Trey.

The recording of the first set is good, but has some cuts in it and loses quality in the second set. The first set is unusually long and the second set is on the short side. I wonder if the setlist for the second set is incomplete, as the recording starts in the middle of Suzy Greenberg. AC/DC Bag is straightforward. Alumni> LTJP is dedicated to the new graduates from Syracuse. The jam in YEM gets pretty hot. The show notes say that it was dedicated to Fish's mom, who came all the way from Ireland, but I'm certain that Trey says that it's his mother, not Fishman's. Golgi and La Grange are on. There's a cut in the recording during Fluffhead, but most of it is on there, and it's pretty good. The following Possum is very nice, including the Andy Griffith theme teases. Foam sounds good, too. Walk Away is standard. Fishman has a nice drum solo in Take the A Train. SOAM sounds like it's on par the time period. A very nice Bowie closes a solid set. In addition to the Take the A Train and SOAM teases in the intro to Bowie, there is also a Fluffhead tease that should be noted. There's a cut in the Bowie jam, too.
As I mentioned, the recording starts in the middle of Suzy. Trey rips in Bold as Love. Lizards is ok. Hood has a pretty nice jam. Good playing from Trey in this one. I like If I Only Had a Brain as a Fishman tune. Contact and Fire close it out well. The Whipping Post encore is very improvisational. Excellent version. The jam goes full on ambient in the middle, not usual for 80s Phish at all.
I'll go with 4 stars.

My buddy plugged into the board for this show but all that he has is the first set. The show seems to be in mono. We have the master. This show defintely happened as my taper buddy is quite reliable and who plugged into the board many times from 1989-1991 and ran the band's analog decks for a good portion of 1992
We have master sbds of quite of few shows from those early days.

This show was the end of my sophomore year and Phish was playing the college circuit. We had a pre-party and had a copy of a Maxell XL II tape from the previous show (Ithaca, NY I believe). In any case, Phish rocked. You should have seen them on trampolines in a bar that's underground with about 10 feet till you hit the ceiling. 7 songs they sung that night I heard at the 3 night run at Bader Field in AC this weekend. I'm going to enjoy growing old with these guys!
