Review by Fathership

Fathership Things begin swimmingly with a quick run through TMWSIY before Dave Grippo joins for a very nice performance of Caravan with some killer Manteca teases. He stays for Ya Mar, which is well sung and Page takes a great solo before The Truth does his thing. Really solid version. The rest of the set is pretty standard save for a gnarly Possum that Trey just rips to pieces. Maniacal playing there. Grippo joins again for Donna Lee and Antelope, and both are played pretty well.

Reba opens the second set and the composed sections are a bit rocky at times, but the jam is nice and piercing like a good Reba jam should be. Good stuff. Next up to bat is a big, relentless series of tunes that are all treated well. My copy of Bag cuts all over the place for a little while, but it's evident that it's a very energetic version with great soloing from Trey. The Curtain is very good and leads into a joyful Dog Log. Slave follows and Grippo returns. This is a nice version, with Trey repeating the same gorgeous riff for a little while until it gets really heavy. Dave is pretty hard to hear on my copy though, Trey and Page muffle everything else quite a bit. Highway To Hell follows and is pretty funny, everyone belts out the vocals at the top of their lungs.

YEM is a welcome addition to this show, and this one is a hoot. Dave adds tons of texture here. The Frankenstein jam near the end is sweet, too. La Grange emerges from the vocal jam and a respectable little jam follows. Contact and BBFCFM end the show in a unique way before a Fish-led Whipping Post encore.

There are some nice moments here, but most everything is just typically nice Phish. 3 star show, but be sure to catch the Truth tracks if you like a side of horns.

Review by TheEmu

TheEmu This is a solid show, definitely, although not spectacular. Pretty much all of the stuff with The Truth is good, including Highway to Hell and BBFCFM (what? yeah.) I enjoyed the Caravan w/ Manteca teasing, the Ya Mar, the Antelope, and especially the AC/DC Bag. The OKP>Bag>Curtain>Dog Log>Slave>HTH run is all nice, and the YEM definitely has its moments. About the only shaky moments were TMWSIY> Avenu M. and the composed sections of Reba (although the jam isn't too bad, and contains more Manteca teasing.) Overall, I'd have to say three stars for this, maybe 3.5 thanks to the sax.

Review by thelot

thelot The SBD recording for this show leaves a lot to be desired. There’s definitely a number of cassette generations in it’s lineage. Art worked his magic to make this one sound as good as it possibly could given the circumstances. This one would make for a great archival release!

The show opens with an appropriate TMWSIY after a fan requests a couple of songs that haven’t been played since the mid 80’s. This opener pairs nicely with spicy versions of Caravan and Ya Mar with the addition of Grippo. Forbin>Mockingbird and Sloth continued the stretch of unreleased material. Possum has a chunk of music missing due to a tape flip. Smokin’ version tonight! Grippo comes back out for the last two songs of the set. Beautiful version of Donna Lee. An engaging Antelope wraps up a rock solid first set.

A nice version of Reba opens up the second half. Bag has some noticeable CD skipping. Absolutely smokin’ version of Bag! Out of Bag comes the first Curtain of the year. Curtain slams into the first Dog Log since 10/21/89 at The Front. The amazing setlist flow continues into Slave. Grippo joins the band again for Slave and Highway to Hell. The latter sounded odd with the addition of saxophone. Grippo remained on stage for an incredible YEM! La Grange segues out of a trippy vocal jam. An inspired version of Contact provides a nice cool down. They invite Grippo back out for a whacky BBFCFM. We are treated to a rendition of Whipping Post for the encore sung by Mike’s 2nd grade English teacher, Marco Esquandolis. Trey takes the drums for this version and Fish attempts to play the guitar. Fun way to end an incredibly fun night in Burlington. A+ show, C+ recording
