This was my 29th birthday show and a real whopper. I caught the Fox show the night before then drove to Charlotte. We got there early and were able to hang out by the door and hear the soundcheck. We heard them soundcheck the Jump monk, they also checked Purple Haze and, i think, Foxy Lady by Hendrix.
Got inside the show and got right up front. Before the show I saw Mike walking around and told him it was my birthday. He wished me Happy Birthday and signed my ticket for me. I asked as a special request if the band could do Mango Song, they had not played it for quite a while, almost a year I think. He said they hadn't practiced it so probably not. So I said, "well, how about Tela then?" He said he would talk to Trey.
The band came out and laid that monster first set on us. When they came out for the 2nd set my friends and I all screamed in unison "Tela!" as loud as we could. Trey looked down at us and said "Tequila?", then proceeded to play the theme from the song. They opened with Demand, then Bowie, and during the Bowie kept returning to the Tequila theme, even yelling "Tequila" at a few points. Then, out of the Bowie, you guessed it, Mango Song! Trey was smiling that goofy grin of his and the whole band was looking down at us and beaming. They killed it as well as the rest of the show. I really love these guys, I'm so glad they're back and playing well again. Rock on Phish!!!
Oh by the way, the next show they played Tela. But unfortunately I wasn't there and would have to wait til 10/23/94 Gainesville for it, again as a request.

Prett-ay prett-ay good show with some great jams and good flow. My Friend My Friend, Ya Mar is an ideal show opening pair in my opinion, so no complaints there. Axilla (II)>Maze ratchets up the intensity from there. The following Gin is one of the very few improvisational versions of the song up to this point in time and is certainly worth hearing. DFB and Paul and Silas are perfectly fine in their role of 'breather songs' before the set-ending action of It's Ice and Slave. This Slave is excellent.

Set 1 highlights - Gin, Slave

Set 2 opens with the all-too rare Demand, serving as the appetizer to the main course of the evening, David Bowie. This 20+ minute version is a great example of the tense and thrilling nature of 1994 jamming. Be sure to give this one a listen. There isn't too much jamming left in the set after the monster Bowie (no complaints), but the Forbin's (w/narration)>Mockingbird is a good listen too.
