This first set works really well for me song selection wise. I'd prefer something else besides Loving Cup as a closer but that's about it. First Tube and Punch is a high energy opening pair and as an unabashed Farmhouse devotee I like its placement in the cool down slot. Moma is its typically funky bad self and Disease stretches out into a pretty nice first set jam with a brief section reminiscent of the Boise Bag. Roggae and BOTT are what they are. I wasn't always a big fan of Guyute but I've seen the error of my ways and now welcome the Ugly Pig in any first set.

The last Peaches until its return at MSG in '09 gets things off on the right foot to start the second set. The following Possum is not a noteworthy version but it keeps the momentum of the set trending up and sets the table for a pretty great 50 minute stretch of music to close the set. Wolfman's is the jam of the night and builds into a really pleasant groove with a solid foundation while Trey leads things melodically before it spaces out segues into Lizards. I think Lizards works great coming out of a jam because it can start out nice and quiet but by the end the energy is right back up. Sand probably won't blow you away on its own but you have to love the segue into Misty Mountain Hop (and the song itself). Even though Wolfman's is the only major jam of the set, it all holds together very well. Good transitions and song placements make this set greater than the sum of its parts. Boogie and CDT make strong encore choices to close the show.

During DWD around the 5:15-5:23 mark there was a definite "Tracy" by the Cuff Link's tease. Alot of ppl may not be familiar with this tune since it came out in 1969. I wasn't sure where to submit this.

I have such great memories of this show - especially the second set. I had been waiting for Lizards forever, and the energy of the crowd during Misty Mountain Hop was off the hook!

Very solid show. First tube kicks this show off in style. Down With Disease is also seriously worth noting.

Peaches is always a welcome set opener for set 2. Possum although being a fairly odd placement also does it's thing to keep the energy. The Wolfman is the goods. It morphs into a hypnotic trance that pulls you in and packs a very heavy punch. Besides Trey hitting some sour notes on the solo Lizards is also very well played. Sand is well...Sand and I won't complain! The -> Misty Mountain Hop is absolutely fantastic and a great cap to the set.

Boogie On > CDT for an encore? I guarantee you will hear no complaints about that whatsoever.

I remember the second set of this show being amazing. The Peaches opener wa a real treat. Moving directly into Possum got everybody dancin'. Then the funk took hold in Wolfman's which dissolved into Lizards. When Sand took off we all new it was time to melt. This Sand snaked through all of our souls for a while before crashing into Misty Mountain Hop. I remember CK turning on the smoke machine for this one and the lights looking very menacing. Very cool. The Boogie-> Chalkdust was the cherry on top for what was a really fun show in Austin.

First Tube: At this point on the tour, they are playing this basically every other show. Not that this is a foreign concept for Phish. When they debut a tune and fall in love with it, they pound it into the ground. This one sounds like the rest, which is to say, super high energy and gets everyone dancing more than likely.

Punch You In The Eye: Awesome one, two punch. Love this tune as an opener or early in the first set.

Farmhouse: Good stuff, nothing out of the ordinary but solid.

Water in the Sky: Page and Trey seem to have slight difficulty hooking up early in the jam. That is quickly resolved.

The Moma Dance: Played a step slower out of the gate. Mike’s bass sounds awesome.

Down with Disease: Interesting version. Once this quiets down, Trey’s strumming gets very repetitive while Page lays down some cool effects. As mentioned by Westbrook in a previous review, there are similar elements in this trippy section that are reminiscent of the Boise Bag. Pretty cool and worth a listen for sure.

Roggae: Beautiful and A + placement.

Back on the Train, Guyute, Loving Cup: All sound fine, interesting how Loving Cup has not been played in the first set since 8.9.04.

First set summary: No replay value outside of that cool jam in DWD. Set is fine and well played, but very first setty.

Peaches En Regalia: 3rd and final time played until busted back out again 12.2.09 at MSG.

Possum: Not a huge fan of this placement.

Wolfman’s: That’s more like it. Breaks out of its little funk pocket right before the ten-minute mark as Trey creates a loop. Bliss jamming at 12:00, reaching some major heights here. Considering how few and far between bliss jamming was employed back then, this is a real treat. 13:45 briefly re-visiting the original Wolfman’s structure. 14:30 really getting quiet and introspective now. Big, sonic loop. 15:25 Trey on mini keyboard. This melts away into ->

The Lizards: Ladies and Gentlemen – THAT is how you Phish. Killer Wolfman’s into Lizards, sign me up!

Sand: Interesting that the debut was super jammed out, but they wouldn’t really take it out for another jam ride until 12.8.99. Some really cool effects in the last 90 or so seconds, wish they would have kept that going but Trey sort of rip chords >

Misty Mountain Hop: Not a huge fan. Page’s vocals, oof.

Encore:

Boogie On Reggae Woman: Theoretically cool in the encore slot but this one is pretty forgettable.

Chalkdust Torture: Some awesome effects at 4:58 but they are here and gone quickly. Other than that, this is played pretty close to the vest. Cool in the encore slot though.

Second Set Summary: Nothing grabs me outside of the Wolfman’s into Lizards which was seriously outstanding. The rest is just standard fare. This show is rated as 4.2 out of 5 on .net. Not feeling that at all, this is an average show. I would rate it a 3.5 out of 5. DwD and Wolfman’s have replay value. Rest of the show is solid yet unspectacular.
