Though Steve is Page’s brother, he’s always been told he looks like another celebrity: Tom Hanks. At their first show back from hiatus, Phish used this to show they’ve still got it when it comes to pranks. During the first set, a scene from Castaway appeared on the venue’s video screens. It showed Hanks’ marooned character screaming for a volleyball he has named “Wilson.” Then Phish launched into their song of the same name, and Trey introduced “Tom Hanks” to sing the final lyric. The next day, all sorts of major media outlets, from the Associated Press to the New York Times, reported that Hanks had made a special guest appearance with Phish. Of course, none bothered to contact the actor’s publicist, or they would have learned he was nowhere near Madison Square Garden that night. In fact, fans learned during the subsequent Hampton run, it was Steve McConnell. Trey made light of the hoax on 1/2/03 before “It’s Ice” when he blurted, “Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Tom Hanks!”
Steve’s first on-stage appearance with Phish was on 4/17/92 at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. The curtain rose for the start of the second set to find Steve sitting in a large bathtub at stage left. As the band played “Brother,” a series of band friends and crew each danced across the stage and definitely jumped into the tub with Page’s brother. This sequence could be seen in the career-spanning retrospective video shown during setbreak at the band’s 20th anniversary concert on 12/2/03.
