Trumpeter extraordinaire Joey Sommerville first played with Phish on Lawn Boy's "Split Open and Melt." His first live appearance with the band was at Burlington’s Flynn Theatre with an edition of The Giant Country Horns on 4/4/94, sitting in for most of the second set. A few weeks later Sommerville was again part of a modified GCH section at New York’s Beacon Theatre for several songs that included a (then and still) rare “Alumni Blues.”

Sommerville’s most notable appearance with Phish came when the 1995 Halloween Quadrophenia set required a horn section. Phish turned to a crew that included Dave Grippo, Don Glasgo, Alan Parshley and Sommerville; this group also helped out on “Suzy Greenberg” later in the show. More than five years after, he sat in for several songs with Trey’s solo band at their 3/4/01 performance in Atlanta, GA.
