History

"California Love," Tupac's first number one hit, was first released as a remix (featuring Dr. Dre) on his multi-platinum 1996 double album All Eyez on Me and in its long radio edit format as the B-side for the “How do U Want It” single. Later that year Tupac was shot leaving a Mike Tyson fight in Las Vegas, whereupon he faked his own death, changed his name to Makavelli, and has reportedly emigrated to Cuba to attempt to escape the spotlight. Since his demise he has been rather prolific for a dead man, releasing several albums and appearing in a number of music videos and films.

The Phish debut of this shout out to all the gangstas, hustlers, and pimps from Diego to the Bay swirled out of the early stages of a relatively mellow "Tweezer" jam at the 7/15/98 summer tour opener at Portland Meadows (officially released as Live Phish 17). The life of this groove, much like Tupac's, was cut far too short; yet it managed to deliver his message loud and clear: “Let's show these fools how we do it on that west side…cause you and I know it’s tha best side… yeah, that's right…WEST COAST!”
