batleon Part of my full run through of Summer '98, see here

This show begins in the same vein as the previous night, with the band seeking to reset and deliver some solid, energetic performances in order to get the ball rolling in the right direction again. They even kick things off with yet another cover... but for sure the Emotional Rescue opener and Down With Disease follow up fit the bill. However when Moma Dance kicks off it seems like the band is done with being straightforward and signals they are ready to branch off again. Mike almost immediately starts playing with the bass line on this one, and the band obliges for the next 3+ minutes, with each member getting slightly playful with their themes in the Moma intro. This is yet another smoking, funky version from '98. Tela, which was becoming quite rare at this point, is an excellent choice of cool down song here. The band then finally breaks free, with an incredibly creative and fresh sounding stretch to anchor the first set. Yet another cover appears in the form of Sneakin' Sally, but the band takes this Sally for a bit of a ride with an excellent bridge section, and then a start/stop Manteca-ish jam to close it that ends too soon. Luckily the band isn't done there; the It's Ice > Lengthwise > It's Ice sandwich provides weird and wild fun in a unique way. Sparkle is standard, but the Funky Bitch closer features a fun YEM-ish breakdown with some thank yous from Trey. All in all, this is a great first set and might be their best set since the West Coast run ended.

The second set starts with a nice Wedge and a Poor Heart that almost gets away from them for a second. Mango Song is a nice touch, but the real heat is a very funky and cool version of Brother to turn this set up a notch. Contact is fun and dedicated to two love struck fans in attendance. Maze and Prince Caspian are two jam chart versions, and these feel for sure to have the proverbial "extra mustard" as they say. The YEM isn't as strong as the previous night's version but still feels like a good finish. The Camel Walk/Squirming Coil encore is a nice touch; Trey's playing isn't clean all the way through but Page ending a show with Coil always hits right.

This is definitely still an odd one... the band is trending back up again for sure but the second set doesn't quite build on the strong first set so much as it maintains. The band is definitely opening up and exploring again, the Sally jam is shorter but still sweet, the It's Ice Sandwich is great, and the second set is full of well above average versions of some great songs. Definitely a great listen, and better overall than the stretch of shows that preceded it, but not quite at the high levels they were hitting earlier in the year.
