spreaditround SET 1:

Julius: Great opener!

Bathtub Gin: Straightforward, jubilant jam with multiple peaks in the mid 12’s – and then three minutes of funk and then a very cool segue into Llama. Very good Gin would recommend! ->

Llama: This one is hot. Things get a little weird around 4 and half – it almost sounds like they were toying going to Wormtown, but then they bust furiously back into normal territory at the five minute mark. This version is sick, would recommend!

Dirt: Standard.

Limb By Limb: Solid!

Funky Bitch: Page sounds amazing on the baby grand. Killer solo! Trey opens his part with the stickiest of all funk. Just nasty. Then goes on to burn the place down. I would highly recommend this version!

Theme From the Bottom: Standard.

Ginseng Sullivan: Standard.

Fee: Very cool and chill jam with some soft loops and Fish chanting Meatstick quotes. This jam was the precursor to the 7.8.99 monster and best version of all time Fee. The segue into Antelope is nice! Would recommend. ->

Run Like an Antelope: Great way to end the set, strong version for sure.

SET 2:

Also Sprach Zarathustra: Super long jam before the first jam starts around the nine minute mark. Mellow and funky. The second jam that starts around the 11 minute mark has that signature crunchy summer 97 tone from Trey. Fantastic! They get something close to a stop start jam going too. Easy all timer. I think it’s either this version or 9.29.99 for the top spot. >

Wolfman's Brother: Beginning of this jam is fairly dissonant and then increasingly and uncomfortably so. That’s one thing about this era of Phish. They were not afraid to put the FEAR into people, unlike 3.0 Phish. Around 11:20 this all of the sudden gets fast and furious, it almost sounds like they are thinking of playing Llama again or teasing it. Around 16:50 there is brief respite from the balls to the wall rock and roll, you think they might be ready to wind it down or cruise into a more mellow section. Nope. They quickly ramp it right back up. By the mid 21’s things are slowing down, and Trey is playing with loops. What he starts at 22:18 is fantastic, it doesn’t last too long – wish he would have extended that thought, had some hose potential. Love the blues jam they get into in the last few minutes. This is an easy all timer. Not all of it is easy to digest, tons of risk taking. But man, what a body of work this beast is. Highly recommended. Nice segue into MP. ->

Makisupa Policeman: Key word: stink kind. Super dark and super slow. Brief DEG stuff around 6:25? Huge effects starting in the late 7’s. Good luck on a headful here! >

Taste: What is that annoying slapping sound starting at 5:15? Fish It fades away about a minute or so later. Strong version but not one that I would seek out for a relisten. Interesting way to end the set. Only three times has this ever happened: 8/14/1997, 11/19/1997, 6/18/2004.

ENCORE:

Possum: LOL at 0:22 someone excitedly exclaims, woo hoo Chalk Dust Torture! Things get super weird and dissonant in the ten minute range. At 11:48 it almost sounds like Trey has a notion to take this into Johnny B. Goode. At 12:05, it’s back to the typical, raucous Possum ending. Very cool. Would recommend!

Summary: Unbelievable show. First set is awesome. The second set brings two big jams. Another great night of Phish. Hampton looms!!! The current rating of 4.593/5 (373 ratings) seems right on the money to me!

Replay Value: Bathtub Gin, Llama, Funky Bitch, Fee, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Wolfman’s Brother, Makisupa Policeman, Possum.
