Review by fhqwhgads

fhqwhgads Woo-hoo, Fall Tour! Petrichor is a great choice for an opener, IMO. It's captivating to hear it flower live, whereas before I had only heard Phish's studio version--none of Trey's orchestral versions found their way to me. Easy to imagine it going the way of Time Turns Elastic, but I am a hearty supporter of that composed epic, too! Ghost rates high on the average-great scale for me; no machine-gun Trey or such as that but it builds to a nice peak. Page's lead section in Heavy Things is particularly energized, perhaps by--as he annotates at the end--the presence of his mom at the show. Home seems built for live performances, really sounds natural in this context. Gin, like Ghost earlier in the set, "rates high on the average-great scale for me." Satisfying peak, though nothing particularly ground-breaking, in this moveable feast of virtuosity that we perhaps sometimes take for granted, i.e. Phish shows. More also blossoms onstage, and fits in very well as a set-closer. It has a bit of a Show-of-Life vibe to it in its wistful reflection, although the song structure itself may lend itself to future explorations.

No Men's really takes us on a ride, with some full-steam-ahead rocking jamming during its (relatively) brief (or concise) 8 minutes and 42 seconds. I don't think this song is gonna be shelved anytime soon, so I eagerly anticipate some truly deep ventures. The segue from a slightly above standard DWD into Cities is remarkable, IMO! And the Cities itself is remarkable for approaching 10 minutes in length and for featuring some textural magic from Trey on Fish's Marimba Lumina. Not much to say about Roggae, Twenty Years Later, but Light reaches some really interesting polyrhythmic grooving. Some unusual occurrences in the Hood intro, though the Hood itself is again (déjà vu all over again) a solid average-great. Winterqueen might've been nearly a Friday-worthy encore choice if not followed by a somewhat extended and groovy Tube and a rollicking Rocky Top. Some skew on the rating here, and if half- or quarter-stars were available it'd be different, but I don't feel remiss in rating this tour opener a 4 (really more like a 3.5) partly just due to the overall excitement of having a happy, healthy Phish fresh off a new album with--arguably--something to prove.
