Review by Mikesgroover

Mikesgroover I imagine only a handful of people at this show were at the Lowell show, so the crowd is exposed to a ton of new material in the summer tour opener.

An outstanding, 12-minute Possum opener gets the show off to a rollicking start. Weigh gets dusted off for the first time in 89 shows, with Page's piano the star of this version.

Stash gives us the first taste of the developing Summer '95 "Space Camp" sound. It goes pretty far out there, but only briefly abandons the theme completely before returning.

Other first set highlights include excellent versions of If I Could and the Slave closer.

To put the second set in perspective, it features six songs in a row that are brand new to Phish audiences, broken up only by a pretty structured Maze. That's a lot to digest for a Wednesday night crowd in Boise.

Spocks Brain is a really weird composition, but the second performance of Theme finds the song already gaining momentum. Around the 8 minute mark the jam gets sinister, with feedback-drenched space and atmospheric keyboards. About 2 minutes of classic '95 weirdness here.

The second performance of Lonesome Cowboy Bill is preceded by a funny intro from Fish, who tells the audience it’s an obscure song. Hinting at a Halloween to come, he mentions The Velvet Underground’s “Loaded”. “You should go out and get it,” he urges.

A solid night of new material introductions, and the Stash and Theme have tasty snippets of Summer '95-style jamming.

Soundcheck: The Wedge, Weigh

SET 1:

Possum: The jam is definitely odd and different in the early going. It eventually evens out and becomes standard Possum fare.

Weigh: Standard.

Taste[1] - Not much to say here regarding the debut. They have lots of work to do.

Strange Design: Standard.

Stash: Standard.

If I Could: Really nice. >

Scent of a Mule: Standard.

The Wedge: Standard.

Funky Bitch: Standard.

Slave to the Traffic Light: Pretty good Slave. You can tell each member is engaged and passionate but something about the last minute or so they cannot quite all get on the same page. Nice effort though.

SET 2:

Ha Ha Ha: LOL >

Maze: Standard.

Spock's Brain: Standard.

Theme From the Bottom: Really ominous and dark jam. So weird they would do this for the first time they play it, then go on and play it ‘the right way’ a bunch until 11.27.96. So interesting. Would absolutely recommend this jam!

Hold Your Head Up > Lonesome Cowboy Bill[2] > Hold Your Head Up: Standard.

Acoustic Army[1] Standard

Sample in a Jar: Standard.

Harry Hood: Love this Hood, they really go for it. Same effort here as in Slave but for this they definitely all hooked up and combined to make it a great Hood. Would recommend.

Suzy Greenberg: Standard.

ENCORE:

While My Guitar Gently Weeps: Standard.

Summary: First set is basically a nothing burger. Set two had two cool jams but a very meh setlist. This show is subpar, tour opener, yada yada. 3/5.

Replay Value: Theme from the Bottom, Harry Hood

[2] Fish on trombone.
